Designate
a corner of your chalkboard as a place for the "Math on my
Mind" problem of the day. Challenge students who get to class
early, or are finished with an assignment, to solve the unique
problem. Ideas might include such things as posting a checkerboard
and asking how many squares are on the board. Students will be
surprised to find how many there actually are. Another questions
might be, "How many 3-digit numbers can you create with the
number: 6,438?" These challenges are meant to expand their
thinking skills, not just a problem to come up with a quick answer.
