While
studying a unit on proportions, scales, and ratios, lead into
a discussion about such careers as architects, builders, etc.
Any career that uses scale drawings of their work would be appropriate.
As
an assessment for the unit, have students create a scale drawing
of a flag. Divide students into groups of five. Give each group
an 8 1/2 x 11 copy of a flag that is already divided into 40 squares.
Students must then recreate the flag on a poster board. They must
figure out the scale and proportion of increase. Use paints to
color the flags.
Also
ask each student to write a paragraph about how they participated
and how they felt the project went. Have groups also come up with
the grading rubric.
This
activity could be done with any picture. A fun idea would be to
have them also increase its size larger and mark it out on the
playground with sidewalk chalk.
