Love That Teaching Idea! Staff Whenever I do a unit on germs and sickness, I can't let it go by without doing the hand-washing test! I invite an employee from the local health department to come in and talk to my students about the importance of hand-washing in preventing illness. I am sure to ask him to bring in his fluorescent lights where students can wash their hands on their own and then place their hands under the lights. Wherever there are remaining germs on the hands, they will show up under the lights. My students are bewildered because they thought they had already washed away all their germs. But the children learn that simply rinsing your hands under water or washing for a few seconds, just does not cut it. So this fun experiment is a real eye-opener! |
