Before
this activity, I thumb through my old magazines and collect different
pictures of children, families, cars, landscapes, food, animals,
etc. Then at the beginning of our writing session, I randomly
pass out 3-4 pictures to each student. I pass them out facing
down so they can't see the pictures before we begin. Once all
of my pictures are passed out, I have all of my students turn
them over at the same time. There are bound to be quite a few
laughs! Their challenge then is to write a paragraph (or story!)
using all of the pictures in front of them. Granted, the stories
tend to be a little on the crazy side, but it is a fun way for
students to construct a new story in a fast and fun way.
